    Part of the reason they kept working on it after engineers said it wasn't going to work was that there was evidence the Russians had an identical program and all the politicians and sensationslidsts scremed that we were falling behind on the tech.
    .
    The Russian program, however, had identicle problems and was also scrapped. But what no one knew until after the Cold War is that the Soviets went as far as to build a prototype. The crews in the plane and the ground were all contaminated, and while the radiation didn't kill anyone directly everyone near the testing had a very short life expectancy.

    Last audio in the video, nuclear powered helicopters? The fuel tank in military helicopters is so massive it could be replaced by a very small nuclear reactor. What is the next?

    Maybe not so crazy after all, Russia now appears to have developed nuclear fueled cruise missiles with a range somewhere between 15,000 and 25,000 miles, perhaps a,manned aircraft was just the wrong application.
