A cyber criminal group is blackmailing financial institutions, and demanding huge bitcoin ransoms for protection against future attacks. The group is calling themselves, DD4BC which stands for, ‘DDos for bitcoin’. The extortion group has been attacking firms since last year, originally attacking bitcoin mining groups and online casinos.. but the group is taking a turn — now targeting the financial sector. According to research group Akamai, nearly 150 attacks have been made in the past year, including attacks on banks, credit unions, currency exchanges, and payment processing companies. A sample DDos email will blackmail the victim for bitcoin and says, “we never attack the same target after we are paid. If you are thinking about reporting this to authorities, feel free to try. But it won’t help. We are not amateurs.” A typical DDoS attack from DD4BC can throw as much as 50 gigabits per second at a victim, enough to knock most offline.
