I blame school for making me hate math, as up to 6th grade I really liked math and without any effort what so ever I constantly got A's (1's in Germany) then in 7th grade we got the worst teacher in our school both in physics and math (and we continually got him until 10th grade, although all parents complaint about him since everyone dropped at least 2 grades). Within that year I dropped from straight A's to D's and E's, I ended up hating physics and math just because I associated them with that teacher. This teacher ruined my and a friends childhood dream of becoming a physicist.

I think the greatest service Numberphile provides to the world is not to provide the explanation of abstract mathematical concepts, but to introduce these concepts through easily understood metaphors that spark an interest in the average viewer.

Numberphile is the biggest leap towards making maths more accessible and fun in modern day. I blame my "hatred" for maths on schools; the way things are taught, the topics deemed important, and of course that schools are run by people who dont really know much about the subjects taught there. I've become a math geek because of numberphile, and now having just entered college, I'm able to TRULY learn more about subjects that I never knew existed. I found a love for abstract algebra, and now I am taking a course on it, and loving it.

Four criteria for loving a subject:
    1) It pays the bills.
    2) It's not all pain & suffering.
    3) It gives you pleasure.
    4) It gives your life meaning.

Legit Everyone in my calculus class hates it but I find it extremely interesting, idk, maybe its that the school system prioritizes us knowing how to do the math perfectly rather than understanding the concepts

I think it should probably be mentioned that laying bricks is a piece of cake compared to modern mathematics. Many students are simply turned off, as I was, by the sheer abstractness of mathematics and the competition between super students who have been going at it since child birth, and go into physics instead. However, that doesn't mean you can't love numbers, as I do, and say that mathematics is the coolest thing in the world, as you perhaps would any sport or art.

numberphilia should be presented to the teenagers as something cool and forbidden – in no time you would have numberphile junkie rapper gangs fighting over Fermat's last theorem

I miss the word "abstraction" in his explanation why math is not part of our culture. In my opinion the ability to abstract over correlations is the ability very few have in a sufficient amount to understand math (not only aritmethics, whats kinda like just applying rules). Other sciences dont need so much abstraction because they show you 'tactile# things at a very low level and then you can inspect their deeper details. Even physics show you what happens and then it starts describing it. But math is (for me) vice versa…
Understanding math without great ability to abstract needs the ability to accept new ideas without trying to connect to something "you already know" like he said.

Anyone else have to look up "archipelago"? #murica

An archipelago (/ɑːrkɪˈpɛləɡoʊ/ (  listen) ark-i-PEL-ə-goh), sometimes called an island group or island chain, is a chain, cluster or collection of islands, or sometimes a sea containing a small number of scattered islands.
The word archipelago is derived from the Greek ἄρχι- – arkhi- ("chief") and πέλαγος – pélagos ("sea") through the Italian arcipelago. In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Archipelago (from medieval Greek *ἀρχιπέλαγος and Latin archipelagus) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands (since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands).

I think what's really concerning is that fact that mathematicians constantly question amongst themselves why the general population dislikes maths but makes no effort to truly get to the crux of the problem- why doesn't anyone ask those who struggled or disliked math why they felt that way? It's the most logical way to alter the teaching of mathematics so that more can come to understand and appreciate it.

I majored in math, and I'll say that I started to hate it when I got farther into the major, because I thought the expectations were unreasonable. I hate classes where you just fail everything, but somehow, your grade translates to like a B.

Because how math is taught in school. teachers tend to make math extremely boring and useless, which results in difficulties for students to understand which then leads to them to not try to understand it because they feel its just not worth it.
